Why Not was founded on July 13, 2010 as a Dutch foundation to support children with disabilities and their families in Kenya. In May 2012, its Kenyan sister organization Why Not was officially registered as an NGO in Kenya, with Mombasa as its seat.
The percentage of people with disabilities in Kenya is many times higher than in Europe. In Kenya it is believed that having a disability is a punishment from God, a sign that you have made mistakes or are a sinner. Many parents are ashamed of their child with a disability; "the children can't do anything, are worthless and add nothing to the (Community) society. They are mainly a burden. Because of the way people think about these children, they rarely get the chance to be part of Kenyan society. The children are often hidden away, locked up, neglected and even abused.
Why Not wants to create awareness among parents, families and people in the community: Look beyond the limitations and you will see a child with its own character, needs and talents. By supporting children in education, shelter and/or training we want to enlarge their world. The families and the environment of the child are also supported and guided towards an autonomous and inclusive existence.
What started as a volunteer project has now grown into a Dutch and Kenyan foundation with multiple sustainable projects and an ever-growing support base. Don't you want to contribute to that?
